Solenis and BASF Complete Merger of Paper and Water Chemicals Businesses

2019-01-31 by Florian Fischer

Following the approval of all relevant authorities, BASF and Solenis have completed the previously announced merger of BASF’s wet-end Paper and Water Chemicals business with Solenis. With pro forma sales of approximately U.S. $3 billion, the combined company will operate under the Solenis brand and is positioned to provide expanded chemical offerings and cost-effective solutions for customers in pulp, paper, oil and gas, chemical processing, mining, biorefining, power, municipal and other industrial markets.

BASF will own 49 percent of the combined company and 51 percent is collectively owned by Solenis management and funds managed by Clayton, Dubilier & Rice (CD&R). The new Solenis has approximately 5,200 employees, with increased sales, service and production capabilities across the globe.

The merger includes the Paper and Water assets of BASF’s Performance Chemicals unit, including production sites in Bradford and Grimsby, UK; Suffolk, Virginia, USA; Altamira, Mexico; Ankleshwar, India; and Kwinana, Australia and related assets including intellectual property. BASF’s paper coating chemical business is not part of the transaction.

“Combining our strong heritages creates the leading customer-focused, global solutions provider for the paper and water industries. Customers from these industries will benefit from our joint strengths, resulting in an unparalleled and complementary range of products and services, state-of-the-art innovations and know-how,” said John Panichella, president and CEO, Solenis.

“Joining forces with Solenis is the right step for BASF’s Paper and Water Chemicals business to maintain sustainable growth. Together, we will provide the broadest scope of products and services to meet the specialty chemical needs of the global paper and water industry,” added Anup Kothari, president of BASF’s Performance Chemicals division. “Bringing together these two highly successful and complementary businesses creates an even stronger global enterprise with enhanced prospects for long-term growth and value creation,” said David Scheible, chairman of Solenis and operating advisor to CD&R.

Clariant MEVOPUR Certified Compliant with New ISO 13485 Standard

2019-01-30 by Florian Fischer

Clariant, a world leader in specialty chemicals, announces that its recently expanded facility in Lewiston Maine, and two other sites in Malmo, Sweden, and Singapore, have been certified to the stringent new quality standard for makers of plastic medical devices. The plants produce specialized polymer compounds and masterbatches offered for medical applications under the MEVOPUR brand.

After a 3-year transition period during which manufacturers could continue following an earlier version, ISO 13485-2016 goes into full effect at the end of February 2019. Device submissions under the old version will no longer be allowed.

“The completion of this process is a perfect example of Clariant’s strong commitment to creating value for its customers,” said Deepak Parikh, President, Region North America. “Demand is increasing for specialized, medical grade compounds and masterbatches. Compliance to the new standard and the significant expansion, will enable our state-of-the-art Lewiston facility to continue to globally deliver to our customers – high value products with unique technologies.”

Although ISO 13485 technically only applies to producers of medical devices, it is seen as an important standard for their suppliers, like Clariant, because it helps reduce risks such as risk of changes in raw materials impacting device performance, reliability, or regulatory compliance. Increased use of QbD (Quality by Design) processes means that more consideration needs to be given to materials used and impact on patient safety.

“With the introduction of the new standard and increased assessment of risk related to materials and change management, medical device and pharmaceutical companies may need to re-evaluate their reliance on materials and methods of the past,” explains Steve Duckworth, Head of the Global Medical and Pharmaceutical Segment for Clariant Plastics & Coatings. “Increasingly, they will need to ensure trust by using expertise coming from materials suppliers – like Clariant — who have a good understanding of and products adapted to the needs of the healthcare market.

Clariant began introducing the MEVOPUR family of products and services more than a decade ago, to help minimize risk at every stage of a medical device’s life cycle. A global team of specialists from R&D, production, sales and marketing, and customer service, works closely with individual customers to pre-test materials and assess risk in order to build compliant, targeted color and functionality into each application.

The three global facilities, almost entirely dedicated to medical and pharmaceutical applications, provide assurance of consistency in formulations and procedures, and supply-chain reliability for all MEVOPUR products. Raw materials are pre-tested to standards commonly required for device and drug filings, e.g.: USP <87><88> (‘USP Class VI’) and ISO10993, as well as the USP<661.1>, ICHQ3D and European Pharmacopeia monographs 3.1 covering drug packaging and delivery devices. Segregated storage and manufacturing lines, plus scrupulous change-control processes, reduce the risk of cross contamination. The desire to comply with the requirements of the new ISO 13485-2016 standard presented additional challenges, however. For example, for the first time, computerized systems needed to be risk-assessed, and then the appropriate validation or verification activities carried out. Even if software is not directly controlling processes, it often present in test equipment used to control raw materials or end-product quality. The project to implement the new version ISO13485-2016 was conducted on a global basis with local site quality managers supported by Clariant’s dedicated Global Quality & Regulatory manager for the healthcare sector.

“Water&Chemistry” – Innovations at ECP-Gathering in Frankfurt

2019-01-30 by Florian Fischer

On 26 February 2019 the 3rd European Chemistry Partnering (ECP) will take place in Frankfurt. For the first time at the ECP there will be interdisciplinary lectures, including “Water & Chemistry”. The Isle Group, which specializes in the selection of innovative technologies and implementation consulting, will be presenting water-based innovations from six nations.

Water – the gold of the 21st century – is rapidly gaining importance in industrial production in the sense of sustainable development: water avoidance, new analytical methods, treatment of process- & wastewater and energy efficiency are topics in which experts from different disciplines are working on solutions.

The aim is to close water circuits, whether by removing pollutants from cooling water circuits and waste water or by separating salt loads and organic contaminants. If this is also possible with savings in energy demand, then the ECP is already there, because in the session “Water and Chemistry” selected companies from Isle will present their new and innovative technologies.

Daniel Frank, Industrial Water Consultant at Isle, is of the opinion that, without new technologies, industrial water treatment – regardless of whether it is cooling, process or waste water – will not be able to meet the challenges of the future. In the key areas of water and energy conservation in particular, ever stricter requirements must be met worldwide. “The ECP offers the ideal opportunity to bring start-ups and SMEs into contact with the industry in order to devote themselves to these future topics.

Holger Bengs, initiator of the European Chemistry Partnering, says: “I am very pleased that with Isle Group we have a strong partner at our side who brings his international network into the 3rd ECP and competently represents the topic of water & chemistry. Only if we handle water correctly will we all achieve the 17 sustainability goals of the United Nations: Water is a very interdisciplinary topic, in the sense of the European Chemistry Partnering, to network innovative people from different disciplines and industries.

Background

97 percent of all products contain at least one chemical process step – renewable raw materials, enzymes, industrial biotechnology, new processes, products from residual materials, digitization, etc. change the processes in chemical value creation, from purchasing logistics to production, marketing and sales. Interdisciplinary exchange is gaining in importance. With the ECP, an international chemical community is growing that wants to create more innovations from the existing technologies at hand.

European Chemistry Partnering in a nutshell

The European Chemistry Partnering (ECP) is an event format that focuses on the discussion of innovations along the chemical value chain. It is aimed at decision-makers, innovation managers and investors in the chemical industry and its user industries, as well as industry-oriented stakeholders and qualified service providers and consultants. The ECP essentially consists of the elements Partnering, Pitches & Exhibition: the companies can present their innovations in short lectures (Pitches) and arrange appointments in advance (Partnering). The ECP took place for the first time on 16 February 2017 in Frankfurt, since then it has been offered twice a year.
